Requirements of a Caregiver (by Canadian Immigration & Citizenship)

The Live-in Caregiver Program allows professional caregivers to work in Canada. Caregivers are persons who can work without supervision in a private home providing care for children, elderly or disabled persons. The live-in caregiver must live at the employer's home.

Requirements that a caregiver must meet to qualify under the Live-in Caregiver Program:

1. The caregiver should have the equivalent of a Canadian high school education wherein by Philippine Standards, you should have at least 72 units of College education.

2. They must have at least 6 months of full-time training in the caregiver's course or at least one year's experience of full-time paid employment with at least one employer in the field of work related to the job that he / she is looking for as a live-in caregiver.

3. They must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French so that it will allow her/him to work independently. The caregiver will be working unsupervised for most of the day and will be asked to communicate with the employer. They must know how to contact emergency services if required and be able to understand labels on medications and know how to administer them.

4. The caregiver should have a written employment contract between themselves and their future employer. The contract should state the duties, hours of work, salary and benefits the caregiver will be provided with. This requirement will help to provide both of the undersigned parties with a fair working-arrangement.

5. Go to a Canadian Embassy and pass the required interview where the prospective caregiver will be asked questions regarding their experience. The care-giver prospect must be able to convince the case officer that they are well-trained for the job. The interview will be conducted in either English or French.
